Find your Windows XP or 2000 Product Key
Microsoft’s
new Windows Product Activation presents all sorts of new challenges, including
the need to have a valid product key to install, or reinstall, Windows
XP or 2000. But what do you do if you cannot find the original key that
matches your machine? In this article, we look at your options. For years, Microsoft has had legitimate concerns regarding its products and piracy. The Windows Product Activation concept is an effort to deal with these concerns. The first step in this process is the 25-digit code used to install your software. Added to this is the process that started with the XP series of programs, of combining this code with the hardware configuration of your computer, and creating a code that is sent to Microsoft to validate the installation of your software. This can cause problems for support techs, because each product key can be used on only one computer. After the key has been activated, it cannot be used on another computer unless you are using a Volume-Licensed version of Windows or Office XP. That means each computer you own has a different product key for the software. If you try to reinstall the software and do not have your original product key you cannot simply borrow one. Normally, you would have to obtain a new product key, meaning a new purchase of the software, whether it is Windows or Office. Naturally, you do not want to do that because you already have a copy—you are just missing the valid key that goes with your computer. What do you do if you have lost your key? Because the product keys are encrypted, you cannot simply go into the registry and retrieve it like you could in earlier versions of Windows. You will need the utility program at the top of the page to extract the product id from your registry. That’s all there is to it. Once you recover the key, write down the number and then you can reinstall your software, or place the it in a database where you won’t lose it.
